How to take the Hogwarts Legacy house sorting test online

Welcome to Hogwarts! You might not have entered the Great Hall in Hogwarts Legacy just yet, but you can put on the Sorting Hat and let it see into your soul...

Just to be clear, you can wait and go through the sorting process in-game if you prefer - this can just save you some precious time on launch day.

If have already been sorted into a house on the Wizarding World website, you can skip to the next section. If not, follow the following steps:

  1. Apparate over to the Wizarding World website and create an account.
  2. Click on 'Hogwarts Sorting' on the main menu at the top, then select 'Get Sorted Now'.
  3. Take the Hogwarts House Quiz. Remember, the Sorting Hat will listen to you...
  4. You'll then be sorted into either Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Good luck!
  5. If desired, you can also go through other quizzes/tests to receive a wand or discover your Patronus.

Note that you don't get to cast a Patronus charm yourself in Hogwarts Legacy. Only your house and wand choices will be reflected in the game at launch.

How to transfer your house and wand to Hogwarts Legacy

Congratulations, you have your own wand, Patronus and Hogwarts house! There are just a few more muggle steps to take however for them to appear in Hogwarts Legacy:

  1. Head to the Warner Bros Games website and create an account if you do not have one.
  2. Go back to the Wizarding World website and click on the account connection page.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to link your accounts.

You'll then have your house and wand acknowledged when you boot up Hogwarts Legacy and log into your Warner Bros Games account in the game itself.

Better yet, you'll also get two in-game cosmetics: the Beaked Skull Mask and House Fan-Atic School Robe.

How to choose your house in Hogwarts Legacy

If you don't want to faff around on the website, you can instead opt to choose your house in the game. Following the main story will quickly take you to the Sorting Ceremony, where the familiar-looking hat will be plonked on your head.

The sorting hat will ask you two questions. The first one, about your 'preferences and preconceptions', does not actually impact which house you end up in. That's all down to the second question.

The hat says to you, "I detect something in you. A certain sense of -- hmm -- what is it?" Your answer will determine your house like so:

  • 'Daring' leads you to Gryffindor
  • 'Curiosity' leads you to Ravenclaw
  • 'Loyalty' leads you to Hufflepuff
  • 'Ambition' leads you to Slytherin

The hat will then suggest the house your answer aligns to. But if you want to change your mind, it does then give you one final chance to just outright pick the house you want.

After the hat comes off, you will not be able to change your house unless you start a new game.

Are there house-exclusive quests in Hogwarts Legacy?

Yes! In terms of how your house choice changes the story, the one and only difference comes in the first half of the game's main narrative, where the story briefly branches off in four different directions based on which house you're in.

More like this

Every house will get to meet a ghost called Richard Jackdaw, but the quest that brings you to him does vary by house.

At this point in the game, your house choice will lead you to one of these four missions:

  • Hufflepuff - Prisoner of Love
  • Gryffindor - The Hunt for the Missing Pages
  • Ravenclaw - Ollivander's Heirloom
  • Slytherin - Scrope's Last Hope

Hufflepuff's mission is particularly bad-ass, ironically enough, with yellow-robed players getting to visit Azkaban for a brief but memorable trip away from the school grounds.

After you've undertaken your house-specific mission at this point, the branching narrative is weaved back together. From that point on, the game's story will be the same for every house.

Note that there is a trophy/achievement to be earned by starting a new game with each different house and getting as far as a main story location named the Map Chamber.

How else does your Hogwarts Legacy house choice make a difference?

The main difference is the common room you have access to. Each house comes with its own common room, and each one will have different student NPCs within to talk to. You can learn all about the Hogwarts Legacy common rooms by clicking the link in this sentence, where we've got videos of each one.

Gryffindor students will see a lot more of Nearly Headless Nick than players from other houses will (likewise, if you choose a different house, you might meet ghosts and paintings that players in other houses don't have access to).

The only other differences between the houses are how NPCs will react to you, with some making reference to your house, and the colour of your robes/Hogwarts uniform.
