KotOR remake release date delayed: Star Wars game reportedly "on pause"
Are you ready to return to a Star Wars classic? Well, too bad.
The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (the classic RPG game known as KotOR to its legion of loyal fans) seems to have been delayed indefinitely.
Although the remake's developers from Aspyr Media and Saber Interactive don't seem to have commented on the news, a report from Bloomberg seems fairly damning for the highly anticipated game.
The report, which comes to us from trusted gaming journalist Jason Schreier and a number of his inside sources, claims that the game is "in serious trouble" with development put "on pause" and any potential release date "delayed indefinitely".
The widely-shared report alleges that Aspyr "abruptly fired" the remake's art director and design director. This purportedly occurred the week after the developers shared a demo of the game, for Lucasfilm and Sony to see.
The developers were apparently "excited about" the demo, believing they were "on track", but Aspyr studio heads allegedly said the demo "wasn't where they wanted it to be and that the project would be paused". You can read on to learn more, or check out Bloomberg's article for the full report.
When is the KotOR remake release date?
The KotOR remake release date has not been confirmed, with the report from Bloomberg stating that the project is now "delayed indefinitely" and the fate of the project "remains unclear".
According the Bloomberg's sources, the game had been aiming for a late 2022 release, "but a more realistic target would now be 2025."
What platforms can I get KotOR remake on?
The original KotOR was an Xbox exclusive, which makes it all the more jolting to learn that this will be a PlayStation 5 and PC exclusive - at least at first.
The KotOR remake was announced as a timed exclusive for PS5 and PC, and therefore should launch on other platforms after the time is up (which is normally 12 months). So Xbox will be getting it at some point, we'd expect, and there is the possibility of a Nintendo Switch release down the line too.
Can I pre-order KotOR remake?
Not yet! Fingers crossed we'll be able to at some point but, at the time of writing, there are no pre-order links available. As soon as that situation changes we will let you know right here. It might be wise not to hold your breath, though, given the latest news.
