In Hogwarts Legacy, you'll find plenty of items and secrets hidden across the vast map.

And if you're a PS4 or Xbox One owner, you'll soon discover just how much there is when the game drops tomorrow, on Friday 5th May. Whether you're in the magical school, shopping in Hogsmeade, or anywhere else in the huge surrounding area, if you keep your eyes peeled there is a lot to discover.

Some of the most exciting collectables are the treasure chests dotted around. It might be our inner pirates, but we love the sight of a treasure chest...

Some of these chests, however, are "eye chests". You'll notice these by the slightly horrific eye in the middle where the keyhole should be. If you come across one, don't just stare back at them – because they're worth opening.

However, opening an eye chest isn't quite as simple as opening the regular chests. We'll share all there is to know about Hogwarts Legacy's chests.

How to open Hogwarts Legacy eye chests

To open a Hogwarts Legacy eye chest, you will need to use the Disillusionment spell to hide from their eyeball, which follows you once spotted.

You cannot open an eye chest in Hogwarts Legacy as long as they can see you. After they spot you, their eyeball will remain traced onto you until you leave their line of sight.

When you spot an eyeball chest, you will need to cast Disillusionment to become invisible. Do this with a decent distance between yourself and the creepy chest. If you cast the spell too close, you won’t be able to open the chest.

Cast the spell some distance away from the eye chest (when it’s not yet been alerted) and sneak up on it. This should let you open them up whenever you come across one anywhere on the map of the large and long game.

Unfortunately, you won’t have access to the Disillusionment spell right away. You will need to unlock it. Fortunately, unlocking the spell should be no bother. To unlock Disillusionment in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to complete the Secrets of the Restricted Section main story mission.

This quest is fairly early into the game, just 10 missions in, with you completing it likely after just a couple of hours of play if you’ve only been focusing on the story up until that point.

So, don’t waste your time trying to sneak up on these eyeball chests if you happen upon one before completing the Secrets of the Restricted Section story mission. You won’t be able to open them before reaching this point in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy eye chests rewards

Once you open an eye chest, you’ll be treated to a crisp 500 gold galleons.

With these eye chests scattered throughout Hogwarts and the surrounding areas, you'll quickly earn thousands of gold after opening a few.

This should go a long way towards improving your Room of Requirement or saving up for some of the best gear in Hogwarts Legacy, so make sure to seek out the eye chests once you unlock the Disillusionment spell.
