Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A typically nuanced performance by Emma Thompson gives emotional heart to this measured consideration of an older woman's sexual emancipation. She plays retired and widowed schoolteacher Nancy, who decides to hire a young sex worker (Daryl McCormack) in a bid to finally explore, and potentially satisfy, her sexual desires. Director Sophie Hyde makes a virtue of the largely one-room setting - a hotel room - to emphasise Nancy's nervousness in the face of the charming and hunky Leo, armed with a checklist of stuff she wants to give a go, as he works through every trick in the book to ease her tension. The serious moments in Katy Brand's script are leavened by its warm sense of humour and generosity to both characters, and while the chamber setting is inevitably a little stagey, this is an affecting exploration of an outwardly self-assured woman gaining an altogether more internal sense of confidence.
