Never Have I Ever revealed its renewal with a video of the cast on a Zoom call – a sight we've become all too familiar with during lockdown.

The 60-second clip featured Lee Rodriguez (Fabiola Torres), Ramona Young (Eleanor Wong), Poorna Jagannathan (Nalini Vishwakumar), Darren Barnet (Paxton Hall-Yoshida), Jaren Lewison (Ben Gross) and Richa Moorjani (Kamala) as they learn the good news from Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Devi Vishwakumar).

Series creator Mindy Kaling also tweeted announcing her excitement for the second season, adding: "It's all because you guys turned up to watch it and told your friends – it's that simple! Thank you so much. And THANK YOU to our partners at Netflix."

What will happen in Never Have I Ever season 2?

Now we finally have a trailer for Never Have I Ever season two, we have a good idea of what's going to go down in the upcoming episodes and it looks like it's going to get messy for Devi!

Picking up from where we left off in the season one finale – Devi and Ben kissing while Paxton realises he has feelings for Devi – season two is set to see Devi try to make the most of her romantic situation before her mother takes moves her to India.

Currently stuck in a love triangle with both Ben and Paxton, she decides to date them both without them knowing – because that romcom trope always ends well!

According to Darren Barnet, who plays Paxton in the series, season two will "show more depth to Paxton beyond his abdominal muscles", while Maitreyi Ramakrishnan also told Entertainment Weekly: "I feel like we stayed true to season one. It's a proper transition. I do think season two is better than season one. I like to say, 'We got no sophomore slump here!'"

Meanwhile, Devi is set to feel threatened by new girl in school Aneesa, "another Indian girl" she thinks is "cooler and prettier" than her, who also seems to take a liking to Ben.

As for Devi's friends Eleanor and Fabiola, the clip didn't tease much of Eleanor's upcoming storylines however it looks as though Fabiola will be getting a girlfriend of her own after coming out in season one. Exciting stuff!

Earlier this year, Lena Khan, who directs a few episodes of the upcoming series, has teased what's to come for Devi.

"There's 10 episodes in the season so I'm doing about two and a half of them. Because of COVID, we're splitting one of them because crazy scheduling madness," she told RadioTimes.com in February.

"Devi kind of – I don't think I can say much but in the first season, she was trying to figure out how to deal with her situation with her father and now she's kind of calibrating a different level of cool in her school."

Meanwhile, it seems Devi's mum Nalini is in for some romance of her own when she meets dermatologist rival Dr. Chris Jackson (played by rapper Common).

"Mohan is probably the only person [Nalini's] ever been with," show runner Lang Fisher told Entertainment Weekly. "They got together very young, and I don't think she's ever [experienced] adult dating. It does catch her by surprise."

He added that their complicated relationship soon "throws the family into turmoil" and "becomes a real chasm between Nalini and Devi, because Devi feels like it's a betrayal".

Never Have I Ever season 2 trailer

Netflix released a trailer for Never Have I Ever's second season in June, teasing the love triangle between Devi, Paxton and Ben, the arrival of new girl at school Aneesa and Devi's continued sessions with her therapist Dr. Jamie Ryan.

Earlier this year, Netflix released a number of first-look images from the upcoming episodes, including one scene where Devi is seen uncomfortably sat in-between her two love interests – Ben Gross and Paxton Hall-Yoshida.

Never Have I Ever season 2 cast

The returning Never Have I Ever cast for the show's second outing includes:

  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar
  • Richa Moorjani as Kamala, Devi's cousin
  • Jaren Lewison as Ben Gross, Devi's school nemesis (turned potential love interest?)
  • Darren Barnet as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, Devi's friend
  • Poorna Jagannathan as Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar, Devi's mother
  • John McEnroe as Devi's narrator
  • Andy Samberg as Ben's narrator

In the latest casting news, model Gigi Hadid has joined the series as the narrator for Paxton's inner monologue, replacing Chrissy Teigen, whose voiceover was cut back in May following accusations that she cyber bullied former reality star Courtney Stodden, for which Teigan later apologised.

"Chrissy Teigen has decided to step away from a guest voiceover role in one episode of the upcoming second season of Never Have I Ever," the spokesperson told Deadline. "The role is expected to be recast."

Also set to appear in the show is rapper Common, who'll be playing dermatologist Dr. Chris Jackson – Nalini's competitor-turned-love-interest. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, show runner Lang Fisher said his relationship with Nalini will be similar to Devi and Ben's. "He is a little flashier. He's a real L.A. dermatologist, with his own product line, he does a lot of cosmetic work, and his office looks like a spa, whereas Nalini thinks that's undignified for a medical office."

Meanwhile, Netflix has announced that American Vandal star Tyler Alvarez is joining season two as recurring character Malcolm – a young Hollywood type who went to primary school with Devi but left when he was cast in a Disney Channel show.

Also joining the season two cast is Megan Suri, who'll be a recurring guest star. She's set to play Aneesa, a new Indian student at Sherman Oaks High who Devi sees as an immediate threat.

Confirmed to be returning in a recurring role is Grey's Anatomy's Rushi Kota, who played Kamala's long-distance boyfriend Prashant in the last few episodes of season one.

The series wouldn't be quite the same without John McEnroe who's back as the series narrator, returning alongside supporting cast members like Ramona Young (Eleanor Wong), Lee Rodriguez (Fabiola Torres), Niecy Nash (Dr. Jamie Ryan) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (who plays Mohan, Devi's father who passed away before the series began).
