Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Adapted from Josh Malerman's novel, the original 2018 Bird Box was set in a world where mysterious entities induce those that gaze upon them to take their own life. Those who manage to survive do so by wearing blindfolds. With this spin-off, directors Alex and David Pastor take the template and transpose it to a post-apocalyptic Barcelona, where all that Gaudi architecture is suddenly looking very dilapidated. Flashing back and forth over several months, the story revolves around Sebastián (Mario Casas), who is desperate to protect his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) and, later, is thrown together with a former psychiatrist (Barbarian's Georgina Campbell) and a child (Naila Schuberth) separated from her mother. The visceral action, notably one scene involving a bus hijack, is thrillingly staged. But, dramatically, this feels inert. The plot doesn't expand the mythology satisfyingly and it all begins to feel like a tired retread of the original.
